Fierce Gaze

Description

Believe it or not, this is a Red Fox. Seen on San Juan Island, Washington. This Red Fox was spotted as we drove past, my friend had actually spotted it. We carefully turned around and I was able to snap some photos. I had thought I had photographed a rare species of the Fox family that was native to Washington.

These Red Fox were introduced to San Juan Islands in hopes of controlling the population of European rabbit. Despite their name, Red Fox can come in orange, red, brown, grey, and as pictured, black.

Female Fox are called Vixens, while males are called dogs. Sometimes, a Vixen will get extra help with her litter of Kits, or babies, by a previous litters Vixen, or a Vixen that is unsuccessful in having her own litter. The help proves great experience for the helping Vixen to have her own litter.
